CBRN Domains and Capability Areas

Specialist training across all four CBRN domains — Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear — as well as the broader HazMat spectrum. Each domain is treated with the same technical rigour, from foundational awareness through live-agent training.

High-level overview. Full programme detail is in the Training Catalogue, free to download.

Primary Domains

The Four CBRN Domains

Each domain carries two threat pictures. Deliberate use drives military and security planning; accidental or industrial release drives civilian emergency response, the work usually called HazMat. The curriculum covers both, and scenarios are built from whichever one matches your mandate.

Chemical Domain

Chemical

Chemical Agents  ·  Detection & Identification  ·  Decontamination

The Chemical domain addresses both deliberate chemical warfare agent (CWA) threats and the broader hazard posed by toxic industrial chemicals (TIC) and toxic industrial materials (TIM). Our instructors bring decades of arms control consultancy and operational CBRN experience in this domain.

Training covers recognition of chemical agent indicators, agent classification and properties, personal protective equipment selection, detection and identification technologies, decontamination techniques, medical countermeasures, and post-exposure procedures. At Advanced and Specialised levels, training incorporates live-agent exposure scenarios at partner facilities.

Military and deliberate

  • Nerve, blister, blood and choking agents
  • Deliberate release, including by explosive dispersal
  • Agent identification, sampling and evidence handling

Civilian and industrial

  • Toxic industrial chemicals (TIC) and materials (TIM)
  • Plant releases, tanker and rail incidents, warehouse fires
  • HazMat entry, gas detection and mass decontamination

Biological Domain

Biological

Biodefence  ·  Public Health Interface  ·  Biosafety

The Biological domain spans naturally occurring disease outbreaks, deliberate biological agent release, and the public health system interface critical to effective biodefence. Mission Support brings specialist depth in public health and biodefence, including knowledge of dual-use biological materials and verification challenges.

Training covers biological agent classification, biosafety levels and laboratory protocols, personal protective measures, outbreak recognition and response procedures, decontamination, medical countermeasures, and coordination with public health authorities. The intersection of civilian public health systems and professional CBRN response is a specific area of our instruction.

Military and deliberate

  • Deliberate release of weaponised agents
  • Force protection, sampling and field identification
  • Suspicious powder and mail-vector incidents

Civilian and industrial

  • Outbreaks and public-health emergencies
  • Laboratory biosafety and contaminated premises
  • Hospital reception, isolation and patient decontamination

Radiological Domain

Radiological

Radiological Survey  ·  Dose Assessment  ·  Emergency Response

The Radiological domain addresses threats from radiological dispersal devices (RDDs), radiological exposure scenarios, and incidents involving radioactive materials outside nuclear weapon contexts. Training covers both the technical and command dimensions of radiological emergency response.

Training covers radiation physics fundamentals, detection and survey techniques, dose assessment and dose rate measurement, radiological contamination control, emergency response procedures, and protective actions for responders. At Advanced and Specialised levels, training includes identification system operation and integration into emergency operations centres.

Military and deliberate

  • Radiological dispersal devices, or dirty bombs
  • Exposure devices, orphan and stolen sources
  • Search, cordon calculation and evidence preservation

Civilian and industrial

  • Industrial and medical source accidents
  • Transport incidents and scrap-metal contamination
  • Survey, dose assessment and naturally occurring material (NORM)

Nuclear Domain

Nuclear

Nuclear Incident Response  ·  Post-Detonation Operations  ·  Emergency Preparedness

The Nuclear domain covers nuclear facility safety and emergency preparedness, improvised nuclear device (IND) considerations, post-detonation operational environments, and the policy context that shapes response obligations. Our expertise spans arms control, non-proliferation, and the intersection of nuclear policy with operational response doctrine.

Training covers nuclear weapon effects, post-detonation environments and hazard zones, nuclear facility emergency response procedures, protective action frameworks, and nuclear incident command structures. At senior levels, training addresses strategic communication and policy coordination during nuclear events.

Military and deliberate

  • Detonation effects, fallout prediction and shelter decisions
  • Command-level protective action under time pressure
  • Operating in a degraded information picture

Civilian and industrial

  • Power plant and fuel-cycle emergencies
  • Emergency planning zones and public protective actions
  • Environmental monitoring and release assessment

Additional Domain

Hazardous Materials (HazMat)

Our training extends beyond military CBRN threat contexts into the civilian hazardous materials environment — the domain of industrial accidents, transportation incidents, and deliberate use of toxic industrial chemicals.

HazMat training covers identification of hazardous materials by placard, label, and UN number; Emergency Response Guidebook application; ICS/HazMat command integration; decontamination of victims and responders; and coordination with industrial and public health authorities. This domain is particularly relevant for civil defence, fire services, emergency medical services, and government emergency management functions.

Cross-Domain Capabilities

Operational Disciplines Spanning All Domains

Beyond domain-specific knowledge, our training builds the operational disciplines that apply across all CBRN environments and at multiple levels of response.

Detection & Identification

Detection system selection and operation, identification methodology, false-positive reduction, and evidence chain of custody.

Decontamination

Hasty and deliberate decontamination procedures for personnel, equipment, and infrastructure. Contamination corridor management and technical decontamination.

Sampling

Environmental and biological sampling methodology, chain of custody, laboratory interface, and operational sampling under CBRN conditions.

Personal Protection

PPE selection matrix, donning/doffing procedures, heat stress management, work duration limits, and suit integrity verification.

Medical Response

Triage in contaminated environments, antidote administration, mass-casualty management, medical decontamination, and hospital reception procedures.

Incident Command
